One Minneapolis-based couple, a professional photography duo known as Paper Antler, has a simple dream for 2012: to photograph 50 weddings in 50 states within 50 weeks—all to raise $50,000 to help support victims of human trafficking. Jonny and Michelle Hoffner hatched their “Fifty Nifty” plan last summer as a way to offer financial support to an organization they’re passionate about, while using their skills and extending the opportunity for others to get involved with “a cause much bigger than us,” says Michelle.
Proceeds will go directly to the nonprofit She Dances, an organization that combats human trafficking and promotes awareness and social justice abroad and at home. The nonprofit recently opened a safe-home in Honduras, with an annual operating budget of $48,000; with the completion of their Fifty Nifty project, the Hoffners will be able to sustain the safe-home for an entire year, or allow the organization the opportunity to open a new shelter in another place of need. Each of the couples they work with during the project will write their checks directly to She Dances.
The Hoffners have a set travel route, starting in Florida and working clockwise around the country to photograph one couple in every state. They’ve already booked a good portion of states (including Minnesota), and plan to have the rest set up by January 1st—but are prepared to book while on the road if need be.
“With the Fifty Nifty, we hope to display that it is possible to give generously, make a living doing something you love, and have fun while you’re at it,” says Michelle.
