BEST CAKE
The finalists are: Buttercream, Cocoa & Fig, Queen of Cakes

We ended up with a smaller dual-layered cake; one layer was made of vanilla cake with raspberry and lemon, and the top layer was chocolate. This satisfied both of our tastes. They also let us display our cake on our family-owned cake plate, which had sentimental meaning for us, and allowed our florist to add real flowers to help decorate it. As a nice surprise, they are going to provide us with a fresh cake on our first anniversary!” —Lisa Lovelace, married September 9, 2012

The finalists are: Bellagala, Gateaux Inc., Graddy Photography

Plymouth | 763.557.9815 | gateaux-inc.com
Roxanne Bungert is a cake aficionado, and she knew she wanted to invest in a masterpiece for her July 7, 2012, wedding. That’s what brought her and her fiancé to Robin Martin at Gateaux. What they discovered was more than just cake, but rather sculpted statement pieces that reflect each unique couple.
“It was interesting to see that she could make all of these elements so lifelike. She really make the cake a work of art,” says Roxanne. “Our cake became a big decorative item, where otherwise we would have spent more money on decorations.”
Martin founded Gateaux in 1996 precisely for that reason. Coming from a background of wedding photography, she grew tired of seeing pictures of couples standing beside generic cakes. Martin filled the void in the market with Gateaux, and now creates intricate designs that are inspired by everything from the wedding gown or family heritage to the proposal, hobbies or whatever the couple can envision.
“We wanted the cake to reflect the things that are integral to our relationship,” says Roxanne. “My husband got excited that so many of his interests could be incorporated. It wasn’t just going to be flowers and frilly things, it would be a cake that said something about both of us.”
One of the Bungerts’ shared interests is geocaching—a treasure hunting game where participants use GPS to locate hidden containers holding small treasures. This hide-and-seek hobby became the inspiration for their cake, which resembled a hollowed-out tree trunk with treasures all around that told their story. Frosting Twins tickets from the game where they met, a kayaking cake topper and an itinerary of their honeymoon geocaching road trip all adorned the masterpiece.
“I was so excited to see it, I remember entering the reception and making a beeline for the cake,” says Roxanne. “It was a decorative piece, it was something that helped tell our story as a couple and it was also dessert! The fact that it was so multi-faceted was so appealing to us.”
